Consolidation of waste management

A $100,000 grant was awarded to Lanaudière Economique by the RECYC-QUÉBEC Performance des industries, commerces et institution (ICI) program in waste management (GMR) for the optimization of waste management in four sectors: the cities of Lanoraie, St-Roch-de-l'Achigan, Repentigny and Terrebonne.

Project objective: to get together to save money!

This project aims to analyze the common waste management needs of IC&I to implement more efficient services and collections of recyclable materials. To achieve this, it seeks to form mutualisations, i.e. networks of businesses that pool their waste management. This can take several forms, such as the installation of multi-material islands, the development of customized drop-off locations or the development of shared collection routes.

For businesses, in addition to the economies of scale to be achieved through consolidation, it is an opportunity to improve practices and recover high-cost materials from disposal. New service, transportation and waste packaging companies will also be added to the existing industrial fabric to improve existing sectors.

The potential benefits of a mutualisation approach are numerous, both for companies and for the region:

  • Reduce waste disposal costs,
  • Improve environmental performance and corporate image,
  • Give added value to residual materials,
  • Limit transport costs through proximity management,
  • Create new links and business opportunities between businesses in the region.

The CTTÉI team has been mandated by Lanaudière Économique to carry out these projects and will have the task of surveying the ICIs in each of the territories in order to identify the recovery potential and the channels to be put in place to better serve them. This will be completed by the end of August.

This initiative is supported by the cities concerned, the RCMs, as well as several local businesses.
